Alain Resnais (Night and Fog, Hiroshima Mon Amour, Last Year at Marienbad) is among the few filmmakers from the golden "Janus era" of foreign cinema still producing vital work, and he's created one of the most delightful and skillful films of the past few years in Private Fears in Public Places.

The 85-year-old Resnais transported a London-set play by Alan Ayckbourn to a wintry Paris to create a warm-hearted, stylish melodrama about six lonely souls looking for love. As Jim Ridley wrote in the Village Voice, "perhaps it takes eight decades of living to make a movie this compassionate, this confident—and this young." (120 mins., 35mm)
