'They Called Me Mayer July' presents over 80 paintings and drawings by Mayer Kirshenblatt. Kirshenblatt, who was born in 1916 in Opatow, Poland (Apt in Yiddish) and left for Canada in 1934, taught himself to paint at age 73. The exhibition and companion book are the result of four decades of conversations between the artist and his daughter, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, a highly acclaimed scholar of East European Jewish culture.
