*** A tribute to Lal Waterson ***
Lal Waterson was one of Britain's most revered folk singers. She helped form The Watersons with her older siblings Norma and Michael, her cousin John Harrison and then later, her brother-in-law Martin Carthy. Together they became one of the most influential folk groups of the 1960s with their signature harmonies.
Lal's song writing abilities were in a class of their own - transcending genre, inspired and unique. After The Watersons, she went on to record seminal albums with her brother Mike and with her children, Marry Gilhooley and Oliver Knight. Lal died of cancer at age 55 in 1998.
For the BBC Electric Proms the whole Waterson family (including Norma Waterson, Mike Waterson, Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Marry Gilhooley and Oliver Knight) will gather to celebrate the songs of Lal Waterson. They will be joined by some very special guests including James Yorkston, Alasdair Roberts, Lisa Knapp, Tim Van Eyken and Kathryn Williams.
