No One Is Not Happy When They’re Dancing
Cheryl Dunn
September 22 through October 27, 2007
Fuse Gallery - 93 2nd Ave (between 5th & 6th Sts, 2nd Ave stop on the F), NYC, NY.
Opening reception: Saturday, September 22nd, from 7 to 10 pm

Investigating movement and emotion, Cheryl Dunn will create a multi-media experience at Fuse Gallery. The exhibition includes large color photographs, video sculptures and a moving hanging centerpiece. The show explores joy as a derivative of motion in many forms, from world famous musical performers to fans, to the man on the street whose various inherent movements are observed and re-choreographed through imagery and objects. The work presents the definition of dance in a broad sense and shows how this energy is used to transcend, for a moment, the heaviness of life.
After succeeding in a career as a fashion photographer in the 1990s, Dunn began working with film, and since has established herself on the forefront of the underground scene. Her first film, Sped (1997) was produced originally as a promotion for a snowboard company, but went on to be featured at film festivals worldwide. The film broadened Dunn’s interest in conveying movement, which has continued into her most recent film, Bicycle Gangs of NY, which encapsulates the artist’s attraction to people who stand apart from their environment. Her photos where included in the Widely Unknown show at Deitch in NYC. Other projects with Jeffrey Deitch include curating Starstruck, which was picked by Art Forum as one of the years top ten shows of 2000. She just completed her first retrospective book entitled SOME KINDA VOCATION. The book delves into the worlds of street art, boxing, protest, music festivals and life on the margins of America.
