Art in the Garden
Sunday July 12, 2009 from 12:00pm - 4:00pm
This summer, the Redwood Art Association (RAA) will be hosting its second “Art in the Garden” event at the spectacular gardens of Dr. Peter Burgess. These gardens include the historic 19th century hunting lodge of William Carson who made his wealth in the timber industry. The event will occur Sunday, July 12th from noon to 4 p.m.
“This year’s event was designed to appeal to those who appreciate history, art and the special beauty of our local gardens,” said Roy Grieshaber, President of the Redwood Art Association. “The Burgess Gardens are a unique Humboldt treasure in terms of historical importance, scale, visual splendor and the use of water features. This is a rare opportunity to experience the magnificence of these gardens because they are seldom open to the public.”
Activities at “Art in the Garden” will include watching 30 artists create paintings in the 19th century impressionist style of en plein air (in open air), raffles, sweets, wine and a historical tour of the estate by its caretaker, David Boston.
The afternoon will also include two brief presentations, by Robert Haynes, Ed.D., on the history of landscape painting, the change of view toward seeing and recording nature, and the development of tools and techniques. The first presentation will be at 1PM accompanied by Jim McVicker and the second, at 3PM, by Rachel Schlueter.
Dr. Haynes taught art history for 35 years and is Vice President of the Redwood Art Association. He is a graduate of Columbia University and attended London University, Cortauld Institute. His specific interest is to understand how events of a time lead to and formed the art of a particular period.
Participating artists this year will be Lois Andersen, Paula Anderson, Donna Bush, Pat Cahill, Susan Cooper, John Crater, Marj Early, Karen Chase Frazee, Elaine Gredassoff, Kay Harden, Beverly Harper, Mary Henry, Yvonne Kern, Claudia Lima. Jim McVicker, Terry McVicker, Elsie Mendes, Karen Merry, Kathy O’Leary, Leslie Price, Riley Quarles, Camille Regli, Yevonne Reynolds, Rachel Schlueter, Stock Schlueter, ,Mori Shultz,
Muriel Spencer, Sara Starr, Helen Vatcher and Sara Westfahl.

The Redwood Art Association is a local organization with more than 200 artist members. The RAA artist community shares a common interest in the creation of art as an indispensable part of life and economy in Humboldt County. It organizes and promotes at least three major art exhibitions each year for its artist members and offers scholarships yearly to art students at College of the Redwoods through its perpetual scholarship fund.
The proceeds from this fund-raiser are dedicated to the Redwood Art Association Building Trust Fund at Humboldt Area Foundation. This fund was established in 1997 for the purpose of establishing a gallery for the visual arts in behalf of Redwood Art Association members and for community art exhibits.
Tickets are $15 per person if purchased in advance or $20.00 at the gate. Tickets are available at Eureka Natural Foods, and both The Works locations in Eureka and Arcata. Advance ticket sales can also be made online at www.redwoodart.org. There is not sufficient parking at the Burgess Gardens therefore small buses will be transporting attendees to the event location every fifteen minutes from Freshwater School near 3 Corners Market off Myrtle Ave (or Old Arcata Road).
