History of Tricycle Gardens:

“In the winter of 2001 a group of neighbors and friends founded Tricycle Gardens (501(c)3) in historic Church Hill, Richmond, Virginia. Sharing a commitment to community, urban ecology, and organic gardening, we transformed an abandoned lot into a beautiful and bountiful garden. With 16 individual plots, the garden produces fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers all year long.

Empowered by our success and guided by our vision of creating self-sustaining, organic gardens throughout Richmond, we are now working closely with neighborhood organizations, local foundations, educational institutions, and city government to support the construction of other community gardens. Working in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University, and with generous support from the Robins Foundation, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, individuals and the business community, we are building a vibrant network of friends committed to making our city a green, beautiful, and healthy place for all of us to live.”

We envision that the money raised from Richmond’s Twestival will allow Tricycle Gardens to not only build more community gardens, but to also help other non-profits. With the theory of Plant A Row, children can not only connect to gardens and nature, benefit from the bounty, but also learn about giving to others, such as designating that one row in their plot grow food for our local Food Bank and other similar organizations.
