Concert 3: Anticipated Return
Ilya Itin - the consummate pianist whose performance with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2009 was such an inspiration to many - returns to Laredo to perform Grieg's magnificent Piano Concerto in A minor.
In 1869 Grieg - the young Norwegian composer - finally found his path to success when he composed his Piano Concerto in A minor. From the opening, striking chords in the piano one immediately knows that something dramatic and delightful is about to take place. The ensuing concerto is partially inspired by the concerto in the same key of Robert Schumann which the composer had heard while a student in Leipzig, but the melodies, the rich harmonies have the unique tonal palette of the Norse composer.
The Remembrance Symphony of Albert Hurwit is the second work on this program. In a delightfully fresh voice the composer tells the story of his family and their people, from the emotional landscapes as they moved from Prague to Russia, to the persecution of the family by the Cossacks, the remembrance of a lifestyle lost to the joy of safe arrival in America.
