Concert 5: Laredo's Own

This concert is a celebration of the talent that lives amongst us in our very community. The concert brings together a world premiere of a work by our own Maestro Brendan Townsend, the winner of the first Laredo Concerto Competition and the Laredo Philharmonic Chorale.

The opening work “No Word” is a lament for a dead child inspired when the composer heard a line on a TV show “When your parents die they call you an orphan, when your spouse dies they call you a widow or widower, but when your child dies - there is no word for that.”

Laredo's talented young musicians are invited to participate in the 1st Concerto Competition in the early Spring 2010. The winner will receive the opportunity to perform their concert with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra in this season closing concert.

The Armed Man - Mass for Peace of Karl Jenkins was originally dedicated to the victims of the war in Kosovo. Like Britten's “War Requiem” it is in essence an Anti-War work. It was first performed by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain in 2000 and since then has been taken up as a central work at choral festival around the world including the 2007 National Quaker Choral Festival and performances in Beijing, China.
