The Government reassures us that the controversial new law against inciting racial and religious hatred is not a law against blasphemy. It's therefore more imperative than ever that the exisiting anachronistic blasphemy law be scrapped, so that the boundaries can never be blurred.

Unitarianism is alone among religious denominations in opposing Britain's ancient and ridiculous law on blasphemy. Like Mark Twain, we believe that irreverence is an essential component of liberty.

We've organised a brief, light-hearted after-work event in celebration of blasphemy. It's at Unitarian Headquarters, 1-6 Essex Street, just opposite the Law Courts at the end of the Strand.

Comics from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival will perform specially written material, a member of the original Dr.Who cast will give some blasphemous readings, Cabaret artist, Sister Mary McArthur has suitably irreverent seasonal offerings and, we hope, some members of Jerry Springer - the Opera, will be amongst our better-known guests at a lively and stimulating event in celebration of free thought down through the ages. There'll also be light refreshments - and the world's largest blasphemous graffiti wall.
