Mark,
This conf sounds cool. I am in Taiwan, working on lifetime project of polar cities for survivors of global warming, year 2500 or so. Maybe sooner. These population retreats will be in northern areas, not the poles, but northern regions along Arctic circle, more or less. Alaska, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Russia. Sorry, UK will be abandonned by then. SIGH.

see more info and images here:

I got an email from Professor Lovelock, he has seen images and he said "It may very well happen and soon.' Google the term "polar cities" to see the work we have done on this so far.

Question; may I make some kind of presentation by video or audio or print paper to the conference? I do not fly in airplanes anymore. So I must do all my work from here. An islander.

Sounds fantastic!

Mark,

You note that: "The idea is to think about the world in change, as that is what
happens all the time. Climate change is currently a very strong
catalyst for us (especially in the 'West', capital W) to think about the fact
that the world does change, often significantly over time.

The day should be interesting, we hope to have scientists, explorers,
designers and artists there to create an inspiring and challenging day...."

This sounds great. Will there be any way for those of us outside Britain who do not fly in airplanes anymore, and who live too far to get there by ship, to particiate by remote? Maybe via video clips or YouTube vids or written statements or papers that could be handed out or posted on a conference forum website? This might even be good for people who do still fly but cannot make it that week because of work etc.

Mark,

We remain fixated on technology solving the problems related to global warming. Maybe there will be break-through, maybe not, but let's keep talking and looking, and hopefully some creative engineer/scientist/dreamer will come up with something to "save the day".

However, in the event that the day cannot be saved, and global warming "events" in the distant future cause mass migrations northward to Alaska, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Siberia....

I remain focused on the "safety valve" concept of "northern population retreats" (aka "polar cities" but not at the poles, of course) that could house survivors of these catastrophic global warming events in the future. 2121? 2222? 2323? 2525? Not a prediction, just speculation.

At the moment there are no major policy associations related to polar city retreats as an adaptation strategy, if all else fails. Even the Age of Consequences report failed to address this issue. And yes, there will be some serious engineering needed to achieve scalability or to beat economic limits of these so-called "polar cities".

see IMAGES here:
http://pcillu101.blogspot.com

Despite limited publicity on the Internet, the mainstream media (MSM) is still shy about talking about ADAPTATION strategies, especially the seemingly scare-mongering concept of "polar cities".

But should this issue of adaptation, in the event that all else fails, be addressed publicly and with a brave heart? We just might need northern safety refuges for the human species to survives. It's a scary thought, but why not at least talk about it.

I have shown the images of polar cities to James Lovelock in the UK, and he wrote back to me last month: "Thanks for showing me those images. It may very well happen and soon."

Color me optimistic. And hopeful. But please take a look at the polar city images we have created so far, and keep the thread moving forward. The motto "be prepared" has never been so vital.

Yes, let's look for fixes. Let's do everything in our power to mitigate climate change, even to the point of giving up our car and airplane and consumer culture. And in our spare time, on rainy afternoons, in a spare moment, give "polar cities" a chance to enter your imagination.

It's science fiction for now. It might be reality by 2323 AD. James Lovelock knows what he is talking about. Shouldn't we be listening to him?

Again, the images, created by Deng Cheng-hong:
