On Saturday, November 21, 2009, the award-winning dancers of Oakland's Academy of Hawaiian Arts will present the U.S. premiere of kumu hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu's new, original dance production, "Waikiki" at Chabot College Performing Arts Center in Hayward, CA . The show will feature newly composed mele (songs) and hula for the Waikiki region, along with a host of classic songs that made Waikiki famous. From impressions of life in Waikiki before Western contact to its "Golden Age" of surf boys and Hollywood starlets, Ho'omalu's modern interpretation of Hawaiian dance promises to educate, entertain and inspire.
