The Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company presents a stunning flamenco performance that celebrates the spirit of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca.

¡Lorca! In Search of Duende is a provocative and captivating evening of flamenco inspired by the life and legacy of Federico García Lorca (1898 –1936), one of Spain’s most celebrated and compelling writers, a contemporary of Salvador Dali and Picasso.

Esmeralda Enrique, guest dancer/choreographer Juan Ogalla and the company artists will create an evening of work that captures the mood, the soul, the “duende” of Lorca’s imagery and life.

Esmeralda Enrique’s company of fierce powerful dancers and consummate musicians are joined by guest artists from Spain including returning 2009 Dora Award nominee for Outstanding Performance for the company’s Cantos de la Tierra last season, Juan Ogalla, along with singer Jose Anillo and regular guest guitarist and composer Jose Valle “Chuscales”.

Through its songs, rhythms and emotions, flamenco is an art form that connects viscerally and deeply on a universal level. Enrique and her exemplary company of dancers and musicians with extraordinary guest artists from Spain, never fail to rouse the passions of their audiences.

Choreographer and teacher Esmeralda Enrique, a multiple Dora Award nominee (including for co-choreography for last season’s Cantos de la Tierra), has been a driving force of flamenco in Canada for the past 27 years as well as one of the most celebrated flamenco artists in the country. With a history rooted in flamenco puro and a strong grasp of classical Spanish dance, her company is renowned for its innovation, versatility and artistic excellence that allows it to present both contemporary and/or classic forms.
