San Francisco Human Labyrinth Training Event #1
Sunday April 20, 2008 at 2:00pm
Sutro Heights Park
Point Lobos Ave and 48th Ave
San Francisco, California Get Directions
NEW--ADDITIONAL INCENTIVE!

All who sign up HERE and ATTEND will receive a cupcake from Ariock (who is getting them from a small bakery). The flavors are:

Mocha, which sounds yummy.
Vanilla Vanilla, which also sounds yummy.
&
Maple Bacon, which sounds, um....

(These editorial comments are by me, hmrpita, not Ariock, who insists that the Maple Bacon flavor is delicious.)

There will be a limited supply, so, again:
This offer is only for people who sign up here!

An instruction sheet, as well as oral instructions, will be given out at the event.

We should have all the equipment necessary, but feel free to bring blindfolds, yarn, rope, chalk (in all its myriad and wondrous forms), and anything else you like, since you can never have too much paraphernalia.

There are no bathrooms in the park. There are restrooms in the Cliff House (see map) and Port O Potties on El Camino Del Mar (see map).

Forget that lame Yahoo map in the upper right corner. Here's a link to a google map:

For those traveling in on BART, get off at Montgomery Street Station and take the 38 Geary bus to Point Lobos & 48th Aves (the end of the line). Check out this link:

Hi hmrpita! this is great! I hope you are able to teach Kai the lost sport!
I know he wants to send all his friends the link for this event, could you make it a public event and non-private to our group so everyone can see it?
Posted 1 year ago
Hi ariadne! I made it public. It's so great that Kai will be there!
Posted 1 year ago
I'm definitely there!
Posted 1 year ago
woo hoo! let's save the worlds! I'll try and bring a bunch of my friends, mostly to baffle them as to what the hell is going on
Posted 1 year ago
ImSirFing, I'm with you. I'll bring out as many of my friends as I can! Should be easy. Who wouldn't want to run around blindfolded and save the worlds?

Just got the email about a possible change in location. Mission Dolores Park has a good open flat area in the lower south corner, doesn't it? Easy to get there by BART too, which is a big plus in my book.

@Kai:
Good to hear from you. I'm looking forward to meeting you.

We're planning to scout out a few new locations tomorrow. One question: Is the spot at Dolores park paved? What we've been trying to do was to find places with flat paved areas for two reasons:
1. We're concerned that there's a slightly high chance of our blindfolded person tripping on grass.
2. Marking the labyrinth on pavement with chalk would be super easy. Grass would be more tricky.
We'll definitely take a look at MDP tomorrow. oh, and did you mean the southwest or southeast corner? (pita will probably know this off the top of her head, but I don't.)

I'm coordinating with Shad0, I may be able to attend with a friend in tow. :)

How big is the paved area at Sutro Heights Park?

I would think we need three things:

1) Someplace people can get to on public transportation (Sutro Heights is tricky too for non-drivers isn't it?)
2) Someplace big enough to run lots of training labyrinths at the same time (if 100 people show up, we probably want to run 5 training labyrinths at the same time so everyone can get experience and try out as many runners as possible)
3) Someplace we won't get in trouble or seem out of place for doing something weird. The Mission at least

Sutro might be fun on pavement to get the hang of running but maybe not for a big crowd?

Ariande and Markus have been practicing with string on grass. She said you just have one person stand on the string while the other person lays it out. Not too tricky if you've got teamwork, and I guess some dikaiosune power. Which we totally will, right?

I found the PERFECT place today. Sutro Heights Park. Check out the photos and look at the Google satellite view. We have plenty of room to draw more than one labyrinth, plus video can be taken from above (see photos). A bonus is a beautiful view.

The width of the paved area is nearly 50'. The length is more than 100'. There are many flat grassy areas in this park as well. It can accommodate a very large group and we can do multiple simultaneous labyrinths.

Also, no problem about being harassed. Nobody will care what we are doing (though I am sure we will attract the attention of the tourists and locals who stroll by).

Video from above is very, very cool.

HHM: I hope you can come!

Agreed with pita about not being harassed. Hell, we might just get some random other people involved!

I'm so looking forward to this.

Speaking for the public transitters; as long as the location is good, I can find a way to get there. As long as it isn't too far from a bus or train stop that is.

Anybody have a specific SF blog devoted to us yet? If not, I just set one up. I'm thinking about adding a forum just for those of us in the bay area. http://mythopoeiasf.blogspot.com/

Let me know what you guys think.

I knew when I was at the bath ruins yesterday that I had heard of Sutro somewhere... Anyway. I think this would be a great location for the practice run.

Ok, I got the cupcake part of the description plus the blindfolds, yarn, rope, chalk. Can you describe what will happen and is the public invited or just the people who already know what this is?

Hi Andrea, anyone can come, you don't have to know anything about the lost sport. We'll teach it to you. (Most of us don't really know how to play it yet either -- but we'll have a few experts on hand.) It involves a bunch of people forming a labyrinth with their bodies while a blindfolded runner tries to escape out of the center. They listen the walls (the other players) humming as their only clue to how to get out...

Hi Andrea,
What kai said. Someone at the event will explain things and we will hand out an instruction sheet as well.

The supplies I mentioned are not obligatory--we should be all set--just bring yourself and anyone else you like. Everyone is invited!
