Colorado raku artist, Bob Smith, will speak and show slides of his work at a free public lecture Friday, April 18, from 1 - 2 p.m. in the Branigan Cultural Center Shannon Room. Mr. Smith is nationally known for his tall lidded forms and vases, many with bright red and crackle finishes. He will be conducting a three-day ceramics workshop at the Las Cruces Museum of Art April 18 20.
Raku pottery, which originated in Japan, is the process in which the piece is fired rapidly, removed from the kiln immediately while still hot, placed in an airtight receptacle with saw dust or paper, and smoked to achieve dramatic colors and crackle affects.
This event is sponsored by the Potters Guild of Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Museum of Art, and the Dona Ana Arts Council. The Branigan Cultural Center is located at 501 North Main Street, on the north end of the downtown mall. For more information, call 575-541-2137.
