Friday November 20, 2009 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Clark University - The Grind
950 Main Street
Worcester, Massachusetts 01609 Get Directions
The Worcester Youth Poetry Slam in conjunction with the Clark University Poetry Slam Club are proud to announce the first unified poetry slam event for the 2009-2010 Season.

Event Details: November 20th, The Grind Performance Space in Clark University's Higgins Student Center. 7-9pm. The evening will begin with a short showcase of Worcester Performance Poets, followed by a preliminary poetry slam competition featuring local teens trying to earn a spot on the 2010 Worcester Youth Team that will travel to Los Angeles Next July for the Brave New Voices International Youth Festival.
The featured performer for the evening will be Jamaica Osorio, 2 Time National Youth Poetry Champion from Hawaii. Jamaica will be on break from her studies at Stanford University. She was one of the poets featured on the HBO series “Brave New Voices,” and earned an invitation to perform for the first family at the first White House “Poetry Jam,” this past May.
The event will close with the first preliminary poetry slam for the Clark University Poetry Slam, as they begin selections for a team to represent the university at the next College Union National Poetry Slam, taking place in Boston next spring.

Alex Charalambides, Director of the Worcester Youth Poetry Slam and Kate Mogel, President of the Clark University Poetry Slam Club are excited about combining forces and sharing resources to help create a show that is expected to reach a larger audience, raising awareness for the growing spoken word & performance poetry scene in Worcester.

Poetry slam is a competition in which poets perform pieces of their own original creation, 3 minutes in length, no props, costumes or musical accompaniment. Poems are then scored by 5 randomly chosen members of the audience who serve as judges. Winners earn points towards helping them qualify to make their respective teams.

The Worcester Youth Poetry Slam Competition is open to all teenagers, aged 13-19. Clark University Poetry Slam Competition is open to all Clark Students.

This is the beginning of a monthly series. Events are free and open to the public. Donations to both groups are encouraged and greatly appreciated.
