Ben Cohen, a 16-year-old artist, creates his art with a medium that isn’t typical for most teenage artist—hot, molten glass. On Nov 13th at 6:30pm, South Side’s Vessel Studio (1220 East Carson Street) will be hosting Mr. Cohen’s first gallery opening. Also atypical for a teenager, Ben has announced that the proceeds from the sales of his work will be donated to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and two of its partners in the East End: The Squirrel Hill Food Pantry and the East End Cooperative Ministry.
Ben has been interested in glassblowing for three years, but it wasn’t until he started blowing glass at Vessel Studio under the tutorage of renowned glass artist Drew Hine that his interest and skill evolved from a hobbyist to novice craftsman. Mr. Hine says of his pupil, “Ben has such great focus on what he is doing that you can tell he is not planning his next move, but his 10th move. Watching Ben work makes me wonder if the next Dante Marioni is sitting in my bench”. It is also Vessel Studio’s understanding that Mr. Cohen may be the youngest glassblower in the region to have a solo exhibit of his work.
