Theatre of the Eighth Day: WORMWOOD

A rare revival of the Theatre of the Eighth Day's landmark production of Wormwood, performed by the original cast. Theatre of the Eighth Day, founded in 1964, inaugurated an underground movement of political theater in Poland. This play presents the wearying experience of life under martial law, progressing through images that are at once anguished, humorous, and brutally physical. Wormwood slips between fantasy and reality to craft a tableau of conspiracy, pursuit, drunkenness, and survival. It ultimately led to the denouncement of Theatre of the Eighth Day by Polish authorities and their exile from Poland in 1985.

This production is part of the Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe Festival, a performing arts festival marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of Communism in Europe, presented by the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. This event will take place in the Abrons Experimental Theater.

Presented in cooperation with the Polish Cultural Institute.
