What:
A BIT OF BRAZILIAN MUSIC ON FILM
Before When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960 to the Present winds up on Jan 31st, we offer this four-part series of high-energy documentaries, plus a fascinating curio from 1937, looking at different aspects of one of the most influential musical cultures in the world.

SWEET BARBARIANS (OS DOCES BÁRBAROS)
By Jom Tob Azulay
Thu, Jan 14, 7:30 pm
Director in person from Brazil!
We present this very rare, gorgeously shot documentary about the year-long process of making the classic album “The Sweet Barbarians” featuring the mid-70s supergroup Os Doces Bárbaros (The Sweet Barbarians), composed of musical legends Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania and Gal Costa. This print, with remastered surround sound, includes scenes that were cut by the official censorship of the Brazilian military regime when the film was first commercially released in 1978. (1977, 110 min, 35mm)

BEYOND IPANEMA : BRAZILIAN WAVES IN GLOBAL MUSIC
By Guto Barra & Béco Dranoff
Sat, Jan 16, 7:30 & 9:30 pm
This highly entertaining new doc is a mash-up of thoughts and ideas about the repeating cycle of discovery of Brazilian music in the world. Through interviews with David Byrne, Devendra Banhart, M.I.A., Os Mutantes, and many others, it surveys the Brazilian music experience outside of Brazil. Artists, producers, DJs and critics analyze how the cross-pollination of music styles, as well as sampling and globalization, have helped Brazil to secure a unique position in global culture. (2009, 89 min, digital video)

FAVELA ON BLAST
By Leandro HBL & Wesley Pentz
Sat, Jan 23, 7:30 pm
For 20 years, a subculture of underground funk in Rio has emerged under society's radar. It's a music that's fast, heavy and violent like the city itself. Funk superstars like Deize, Tigrona, Mr Catra, Duda Do Borell all make appearances. Even traficantes, funkieros, mothers and fathers, workers and students in Rio all have a part to play in this marginalized street culture. (2009, 80 min, digital video)

DISCOVERY OF BRAZIL (DESCOBRIMENTO do BRASIL)
By Humberto Mauro
Sun, Jan 24, 4:30 pm
An early example of Brazilian cinema, this 1937 film depicts the perilous journey of Pedro Álvares Cabral’s journey from Portugal to Brazil. But the real star is the beautiful cantata by Heitor Villa Lobos that permeates the film. (1937, 62 min, digital video restoration)
