William F. Jackson was Sacramento's leading painter from 1880 until his death in 1936. Trained at the California School of Design in San Francisco, Jackson painted landscapes that depicted the rugged backcountry near Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada, as well as California hillsides carpeted with springtime poppies and lupine.
