Burning Man 2006, "Hope and Fear: the Future"
Monday August 28, 2006 - Monday September 4, 2006 at 12:00am
Black Rock City
8 mile entrance, Nevada Route 34
Gerlach, Nevada 89412 Get Directions

Ever since Larry began revealing the '06 theme, it's reverberated more throughout the Project than any other. Starting with the Burning Man board retreat in October, the six members hashed out their lives. Then senior staff and full-time office staff spent six days meeting, reviewing this year's event. For the first time ever the majority of the retreat was spent talking about the future—the 5 year future, even the 10 year future.

“We all seemed to agree that we are reaching a new comfort level with the event, a certain confidence in how we're approaching things. We're still learning about managing people, process and community. We're still learning about how to create a society, if only for 8 days in the desert. But for many of the past 10 years we have been driven by the possibility the event might not even happen. We've struggled, fighting for survival. Living on adrenaline, we've learned to face our fears, but now that we've apparently come through, we're forced to ask ourselves: What was all this effort for? For the mere right to exist, or for the hope of being and becoming something more? Very fortunately for us, we're not alone, as it sometimes seemed in the past. Instead, we are surrounded by great and fertile and brilliant community of people—and it's now their hopes and their initiatives that spur us on.”

—Maid Marian, Jack Rabbit Speaks, v10 #9

The TriBe is planning another large scale art project for Burning Man 2006, and we'd like to invite you and your friends to be a part of it. In 2006 we are going to break the Guinness Worlds Record for the longest Chinese Festival Dragon! The current record is 1.89 miles, set at the great wall of China. We will attempt to break that record by connecting 530 twenty foot body sections together on the playa.

Made From HULA HOOPS!
Here's the easy part. Each section is made from HULA HOOPS - PVC SPRINKLER PIPE AND BED SHEETS... that's It! There are no special tools or expensive materials required. You can decorate it as much or as little as you want. The fiery and animated head will be created by Burning Man artist Jim Bowers, creator of the Eyes Of Gawd.
So build as little as 10 feet or get your whole camp together - throw a dragon building party weekend - and build a 100 footer!

Take a look at our step by step online tutorial. Complete with photgraphs tips, tricks and a dash of Burning Man humor. Sign up to build the dragon and subscribe to our burningdragon yahoo groups chat list. The dragon is already over two football fields long and participants are throwing out new ideas and posting their own project snapshots.

NO SPECTATORS! BE THE DRAGON!

Hugs not handshakes,
Jim Bowers

Add your regional events to the Burning Man Regionals map:

Nym, Platial demands pretty harsh Terms and Privacy agreements. By comparison, Robot Co-op seeks much more generous and less commerce-driven terms for 43 Places.

If you know Chris Schmidt, since he works at Platial, maybe he has some leverage over their onerous Conditions.
