Eddie Lopez has been in the dance business for a long and has also managed salsa clubs. So he know about having a good time. His lessons are basic but thorough and usually reasonably well attended (although mostly by beginners). His girlfriend, Gracie, usually helps him teach.
After the lessons, be sure and stay to enjoy the great salsa, meringue and bachata music from Mary's Band. They don't have a lot of players but they are 'tight' and put out lots of good sound. Mary, the leader of the band, is nice to look at and does have an excellent voice and presents herself very well on stage. I think she could easily be a good blues singer too.
Plaza 59 (P59) is probably, all things considered, my favorite club right now (although Amnesia has a lot of unrealized potential) because it's probably the swankiest club in town and has great live music both Friday and Saturday, excellent floor, good acoustics, good lighting, excellent decor, beautiful restrooms, covered walking area out front (in case it's raining), plenty of free parking (unless you get there too late in the evening), free valet parking for the salseras and there's usually lots of salseras and salseros there who are eager to dance.
There is a cover charge for the guys after 10pm (I think) but to get around that...just be there early.
P59 is managed/owned by Alberto Franchetti, the gentleman who used to manage Tropicana. He's a real nice guy to get to know and you should introduce yourself when you're there. Tell him the WanderingSalsero sent you :-)
