RHUMBA Y BONGO DANCE COMPANY at
Scott Gertner's SkyBar

FREE SALSA LESSON usually start around 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

Lessons taught by Ruby Rivera, founder and director of Rhumba Y Bongo Dance Company. Ruby is usually assisted by Elvis Presely look-alike, Christian Quintanilla (did I spell that right?)

Ruby is both a dancer, a dance company director and an event promoter so she knows more than a little bit about salsa. Beginners will like the way she breaks everything down into bit sized bits and more advanced dancers will appreciate some of the simple but sometimes profound comments she makes about various aspects of leading, following and dancing style.

Sky Bar is and has always been very popular...probably because it's up on the 10th floor of a building near downtown Houston and the view from either side of the roof veranda is spectacular at night.

The floor, recently expanded, is still rather smallish but....they still pack'em in. Also, I don't like the acoustics there. The ceiling is very low and the bandstand is right next to the dance flow, all of which contributes to making the sound very loud usually. Some people don't mind that but that's the primary reason I don't go there.....plus the fact that there's a $10 cover charge for guys. Ladies get in free all night.

But it's a very nice club and very popular for sure. The level of dancing you'll see there is usually very high and finding a dance partner is never a problem.

Orquesta Salmerum, their band, has been has been playing there for years that I know of.

Valet parking is available but I always park on nearby streets and I've never had a problem. After you leave, there are a few cozy places you can stop into in the area to get a bit to eat if you want.
