The title of this production refers to a British officer sent to Ireland in the 1830s to literally change the names of cities and towns from Gaelic to English. However, the title takes on new meaning as the officer discovers a sudden passion for the people and the places -- specifically the music -- forcing him to reconsider robbing the land of its character. This production, written by Brian Friel, then becomes a sort of 'Romeo and Juliet' -- the officer and his striking new Irish girl both realizing their love is doomed.
