Sherway Gardens' Gallery in the Garden: Second Nature
Thursday April 8, 2010 - Monday May 24, 2010
Sherway Gardens
25 The West Mall
Toronto, Ontario Get Directions
In celebration of Earth Day, Sherway Gardens’ current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Second Nature presents artworks incorporating recycled, repurposed, reconstructed, upcycled, redesigned, enhanced, tweaked and found materials that provide commentary on the future of the planet. Fibre art by Marie Campbell, Shirley Kirby, Yvonne Lane, Ann O’Shea and paintings, sculptures and constructions by Paul McCusker, Quan Luc Steele, Helen McCusker, Susan Dain, Eileen Menzel, Karen Morgan, Linda Semple, Janice Ykema and Robin Hollingdrake will be on display until May 15th, 2010. Call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca for more information.

Etobicoke artists Marie Campbell, Shirley Kirby, Yvonne Lane, and Ann O’Shea give wonderful examples of the traditional fibre crafts of rughooking and quilting, giving new life to recovered materials through their work with recycled fabrics. Ann and Marie have used traditional wool recovered and repurposed from clothing and blankets while Shirley ventured from the traditional fabrics and used old nylons.

Mississauga’s Paul McCusker shares his futuristic sci-fi image Resistance is Fertile, an image which could speak to the tenacity of life or of the potential eradication of the last signs of vegetation on earth.

Etobicoke’s Quan Steele and Mississauga’s Helen McCusker incorporate natural materials that have been found with materials that have been recycled.

“I grew up in a family that didn't throw anything out and believed that everything could be put to a new use if it outlived its original purpose,” says Helen. “True to my upbringing, I save trimmings from my shrubs and trees when I like the look of the wood, scraps of lumber and bits of fabric. Eventually inspiration strikes and the bits and pieces come together.”

Etobicoke based artists Susan Dain, Eileen Menzel, Karen Morgan, Linda Semple and Mississauga’s Janice Ykema and Robin Hollingdrake all discovered ways to reuse man made materials and give second life to man-made artifacts by making art with contemporary resources to enhance their imagery.
Happy Earth Day!
