VideoCabaret presents The Great War

Michael Hollingsworth and VideoCabaret head into the trenches once again with the return of their Dora Mavor Moore Award-winning production, The Great War, part of The History of the Village of the Small Huts series, for a limited run beginning April 27 at Toronto’s legendary Cameron House.

Staged in VideoCabaret’s signature ‘black-box,’ seven actors magically transform into 40 characters – from the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to the infantry grunts long forgotten in history textbooks – to tell the epic story of the First World War and the death of British Canada.

In 1914, young Canadian men recite Kipling and young women read suffragist pamphlets, unaware that their country is about to be dragged into one of the bloodiest conflicts in modern history, The War to End All Wars. Soon, men from across the country find themselves fighting in Ypres, Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Amiens, as the war devours millions of lives and forever changes Canada’s political landscape.

Winning the Dora Award for Outstanding New Play, The Great War first premiered in 1993 to critical acclaim, part of The History Plays, an ambitious and satirical play cycle recounting the history of Canada from colonization through to Brian Mulroney. Since 2000, VideoCabaret has been re-inventing the plays in an effort to combat Canadian ‘cultural amnesia’ while entertaining audiences across the city.

"First World War brilliantly recreated…. in a style no one else on earth can lay claim to." -Globe & Mail
