The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has been chosen by the National Endowment for the Arts to receive a Big Read grant in 2010. The Big Read is a nationwide initiative designed to restore reading to the center of American culture through local community programs that offer book discussions and activities centered on a single book. The title chosen for the Junction City, Geary County, and Fort Riley community is Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, a novel that follows a platoon of infantrymen through the jungles of Vietnam. Companion tiles for young people are The Wall by Eve Bunting and Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Arts Midwest.Ages/Grades: All ages
