Frank Holzlhuber, a young Austrian seeking his fortune in America, spent four years from 1856-1860 in the "land beyond the sea." With a 5" x 7" sketch pad and watercolors, he captured "living history" in a unique way. He painted what he was -- Indian life, buffalo, the Coulee Region, logging in the woods, paddle wheelers rafting on the river and railroad beginnings. Reproductions of these are displayed in the museum.
