Kakelugnar
Wednesday May 23, 2007
American Swedish Institute
2600 Park Ave S
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55407 Get Directions
The mansion boasts eleven porcelain tile stoves. These stoves, called "kakelugnar" in Swedish, are a combination fireplace and heating stove. They were made by two porcelain factories in Sweden, the Uppsala- Ekeby and Rorstrand Porcelain Companies. Swan Turnblad ordered the stoves, which were then transported in sections and later assembled in the rooms of the mansion. The eleven stoves differ in color and style and no two stoves are alike. Each was chosen to coordinate with the interior design of a particular room. Some have nickel firebox covers with ornate handles; others have arched or square decorated brass double doors.
