Magic Theatre present Sloan Symposium Panel on Global Warming

Magic Theatre, San Francisco?s premiere home for new plays, announces the Sloan Symposium, a free forum open to the public taking place Wednesday, April 5 at 4pm at Magic Theatre. Titled The Ice-Breaker Panel on Climatology: Ice Caps & Shifting Global Climate, the public forum accompanies the world premiere production of The Ice-Breaker by David Rambo, which explores global warming.

The panel features scientific experts Eric Steig, Isotope Geochemist and Professor at University of Washington; Christina Hulbe, Geophysicist, Professor at Portland State University; and David Archer, Chemical Oceanographer, Professor at University of Chicago; and will be moderated by Thomas Humphrey of San Francisco?s Exploratorium.

The panel is presented by The Magic Theatre / Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Initiative as a satellite event in association with HOT HOUSE?06, Magic?s national platform for new plays. For reservations, please call (415) 441-8822.

?The Ice-Breaker suddenly seems ripped from the headlines, addressing global environmental issues in a very human and intimate fashion,? says Artistic Director Chris Smith. ?Engaging a public dialogue about the scientific issues is at the heart of the Sloan Initiative and the Sloan Symposium is a wonderful opportunity to expand our community?s awareness.?

The Ice-Breaker by David Rambo is the third play in this year?s HOT HOUSE, Magic?s national platform for new plays. Directed by Art Manke, The Ice-Breaker presents the cut-throat and politicized world of science research. A young PhD student on the verge of a momentous discovery seeks an ally in a disgraced genius and their relationship takes an unexpected turn. The Ice-Breaker previews Saturday, March 11 through Friday, March 17; Opening Night is Saturday, March 18, with performances in the Sam Shepard Theatre. The play runs in rotating repertory with two other world premieres through April 9.
