Held off-site at %.S. McHugh's at 21 Mercer Street, Seattle, Science Caf s bring scientists face-to-face with the general public in the comfortable, lively atmosphere of a neighborhood caf or pub. The evening begins with a brief presentation by a scientist, which kicks off an extended discussion session between the scientist and audience. Previous caf s have covered climate science, evolution and religion, robotics, and health care, just to name a few. All Science Caf s are free to the public, open to all ages and no science background is required! October 5-The Orphan Tsunami of 1700. One winter's night in the year 1700, a mysterious tsunami flooded fields and washed away houses in Japan. Samurai, merchants, and villagers wrote of the event, but nearly three centuries would pass before discoveries in North America revealed the tsunami's source. Geologist Brian Atwater from the University of Washington will discuss this geological detective story and answer your questions about the likelihood of another giant Cascadia earthquake.
