Current Trends in Metadata Management Research

Taxonomy and metadata is important when managing content, especially for those technical communicators working in the usability or information architecture fields. As companies compile more sources of data, it has become increasingly important to enable information to flow between data sources, both for doing business within the enterprise and for cross-company ventures.Our speaker, Rachel Pottinger, will discuss the current trends in metadata management research, including how taxonomies and ontologies can be used, and when their usefulness may be limited.This talk is relevant to those professionals: working in an environment where there's a content management system or where one will be implemented; indexing their content for retrieval, whether by search engines or by other internal methods; indexing for multiple product lines; working with localization with search implications. Rachel Pottinger is an assistant professor in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Washington. Her main research interest is data management, particularly data integration, how to manage metadata, and how to manage data that is currently not well supported by databases.
