Season 61 is all about being in the dark with strangers as the Toronto Film Society screens the first of 7 double features.
CITY STREETS 1931 directed by Rouben Mamoulian with Gary Cooper, Sylvia Sydney and Paul Lukas--Adapted from Dashiell Hammett's only screenplay, this visually stunning pre-code gangster film filled with bootleggers and murder transcends through the stellar performances of it's stars to become one of the handfull of prototypes of film noir. Rare 16mm print.
GARMENT JUNGLE 1957 directed by Vincent Sherman with Lee J. Cobb, Gia Scala-This sharply made, muck racking expose on the seamier side of the fashion world is a rarely seen and overlooked gem of the noir genre. This film is dressed to kill and packs a punch.
