Arte En La Charreria
Sunday January 9, 2011 from 12:00pm - 5:00pm
Eiteljorg Museum
500 W Washington St
Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 Get Directions
La Charreria has become a symbol of Mexico's national identity. The exhibit examines the rich artistic traditions of la Charreria, and celebrates the work and skill of the artisans who create the beautiful objects associated with the event. Similar in many ways to the rodeo in the United States, Charreria is an extremely popular equestrian sport in Mexico. Charros (horsemen) and Charras (horsewomen) compete in a series of events that test skills such as horseback riding and roping. The events of the Charreria developed from ranching and agricultural traditions brought from Spain by conquistadors in the 16th century. Today Charreria is the national sport of Mexico. The exhibit features a variety of men's and women's costumes, as well as the saddles, spurs, and ropes used in the Charreria. In addition to objects, the exhibit includes several paintings depicting la Charreria, and video of actual events.
