Guided Walk Back in Time: Big Table Mountains Hike. Saturday, April 9, caravan at 8:00am, program from 9:00am to 2:30pm, return at 3:30pm. As lava flowed down the ancient San Joaquin River, it left a hard volcanic footprint that stood the test of time. The softer outer-laying banks eventually eroded away, taking sand and sediments away and lowering the valley floor. Today, we are left with the fantastic landforms of the Table Mountains, which support an amazing array of special vernal pool flora and fauna on the top of the mesas. Walk up the 2-mile long, seldom seen north trail, to reach the 1-mile loop at the top. From the lunch spot, watch the hawks soar and the water flow above Millerton Lake, before heading down the trail to the vehicles. Specialists such as Dr. Bob Merrill, geologist, will accompany the tour to share enthusiasm and expertise about this wonderful place. Own transportation, sack lunch and water are required. Carpooling is encouraged. To register for any of the walks or canoe trips please call 559-248-8480 ext 119. Reservations are required, as space is limited for each walk.
