Alan Strang, a young man of seventeen, has committed a brutal act against six horses; his brilliant psychiatrist (Dr. Dysart) works to unravel the motivation behind this violent act. Dysart applies God like skills in his attempt to fix this broken young boy, and as he does, he begins to envy the boys passion - a passion that he will never experience in his own life.
The cast includes Kurt Brighton (Dysart), Jose Zuniga (Alan), Caitlin Tomlinson (Jill), Theresa Dwyer Reid (Hester), (Nurse), Libby Rife (Dora), Andy Hankins (Frank) and Roger L. Simon (Dalton). The Horses are portrayed by Dan Bray, Preston Lee Britton, Addison Parker and Zach Shotwell.
Peter Shaffer was inspired to write Equus when he heard of a crime involving a 17-year-old who blinded six horses in a small town near London. He set out to construct a fictional account of what might have caused the incident, without knowing any of the details of the crime.
Equus won Shaffer the 1975 Tony Award for Best Play as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and ran for over 1000 performances on Broadway. Equus was revived in London in 2007 with Richard Griffiths as Dr. Dysart and Daniel Radcliffe as Alan Strang. The London revival transferred to Broadway in 2008 and closed in February 2009.
