Red Earth: A Malian Journey, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s stunning Grammy-nominated CD, was the result of her search for her African ancestry, which she found in Mali. It is also her muse—a vibrant blending of Malian musicians and traditional African instruments coupled with the vocal and musical traditions of American jazz. The vocalist has been touring with the Red Earth project nationally and internationally since the CD’s release in 2007. She sets down in the Bay Area for a week—two nights in San Francisco, four in Oakland—with her amazing Red Earth musicians: pianist Edsel Gomez, bassist Ira Coleman, and percussionist Minino Garay, her regular trio, plus Malian colleagues Mamadou Cherif Soumano (kora), Yacouba Sissoko (tamani, n’goni), Mamani Kéita (vocals), and Kabiné Kouyaté (vocals).
