Intelligent songwriting, and intricate, whimsical harmonies can be expected from the trio Mad Agnes and special guests Lisa Moscatiello (moss kaw tea ELLO) and Fred Lieder (LEE der) in a concert on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. Tickets for the concert are $14 for adults, $12 for students with ID and $7 for those under 16, and can be ordered with Visa or MasterCard by calling (757) 259-4070. This is another in the Library's Dewey Decibel Concert Series.
The genre-bending trio Mad Agnes -- made up of New England performers Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders -- "brims with funny showmanship, the most agile, rambunctious harmonies and intense beauty" according to the "Boston Herald." Compared to progressive-folk artists like Fairport Convention, the multi-faceted Mad Agnes thrives on story-telling and a tradition steeped in classical motifs, intricate harmonies and complex counterpoint. Mad Agnes includes simple a cappella and breathtaking instrumentation on guitars, bass, mandolin and keyboard.
Sharing the stage is Lisa Moscatiello, an extraordinary song interpreter with a voracious appetite for unusual and emotionally potent songs. Accompanied by Fred Lieder on cello, Lisa's award-winning music is a joyous foray into the high country of contemporary folk, acoustic pop, jazz, and timeless folk ballads from Celtic, American and European traditions. "Billboard" magazine says Lisa has "one of the most gorgeous vocal instruments in all of folk-tinged pop." Moscatiello recently took home four awards -- including Album of the Year for "Trouble From the Start" -- at the Washington Area Music Awards.
