Weekly themes (below) will be explored in a multitude of meaningful and interesting ways to ensure that each camper ends the week with a well-rounded understanding of the overall theme, in addition to a better understanding and appreciation of nature in general. The weekly theme is explored through a combination of the following activities: close observations, investigations, simple projects, nature journals, walks on the trails, art activities, related group games, songs, and more. The open house on the last day of every week invites campers to share their understanding of the weekly theme with their friends and families. - - Week 1 - June 27-July 1: You Can Make It Happen (Nature & Science) - How can you make a difference every day to make the world a better place? Come share your ideas with others and work together to create solar ovens, design gardens, and create exhibits to teach families about nature in the city. You really can make a difference! - - Week 2 - July 5-8: Finding Your Way (Maps & Orienteering) - Rulers, compasses and maps are some of the tools you will use to find your way. As we explore and discover hidden areas of the BNC, we will use these tools and others to solve problems, help others and create our own maps of the sanctuary. - - Week 3 - July 11-15: Web of Life (Habitats) - Spiders aren't the only ones who build webs; the natural world is filled with interconnected relationships called the web of life. During this week, we will take a closer look at plants that compete with each other for sunlight, animals that help each other to survive, and the predators and prey at the BNC. - - Week 4 - July 18-22: Stalk, Slither & Soar (Adaptations) - Have you ever wondered why birds sing a pretty song in the spring, or why hawks make lazy circles in the sky? It's all about survival! Learn why plants and animals look and act the way that they do as we explore the trails, create nature inspired art, and play predator-prey games. - - Week 5 - July 25-29: Experi-mazing (Science Investigations) - Ever wonder why some insects have hard shells and others don't? Ever think about why certain plants have thorns and others have flowers? Join us as we put these scientific questions to the test and investigate the amazing wonders of the BNC. - - Week 6 - August 1-5: Under Construction (Animal Adaptations - Building) - Dens, webs, nests, mounds, shells, and lodges are just a few of the creative ways animals build the world around them. We will weave, dig and construct to discover why and how the industrious animals around us create these amazing features. We will model our creations after what we discover in nature. - - Week 7 - August 8-12: Dig What You Eat (Gardening/Culinary Adventures) - Eat what you dig! The tastiest food is the food you grow yourself! A little bit of weeding and watering result in fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. Find out about these veggies and more as we set out on a culinary adventure! - - Week 8 - August 15-19: Survivor BNC (Survival) - What does it take to survive in the wild? Can you build your own shelter? Can you read a map and find your way to water? Come see if you have what it would take to survive at the BNC. You'll have exciting outdoor adventures and lots of fun testing your skills with an overnight at the Nature Center. - The Falcons will camp overnight inside the nature center for one night. It is optional for everyone and there is no extra cost. - - Week 9 - August 22-26: Insect Investigators (Insects & Others) - Grasshoppers, crickets, ants, bees, butterflies, and spiders are all very active at the BNC in the summertime. Find out more about these creatures by observing them up close. We'll learn what a bug eats for dinner, and how a bug keeps from being dinner! - - - Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Children can attend up to 4 weeks of camp. If additional weeks are desired, you may be put on a waiting list. Registration is required. Call 617-983-8500 for details. See http://www.massaudubon.org/catalog/listing.php?program_code=775-BN11SP1 for more information.
