BA08: Black August
Sunday August 31, 2008 at 7:00pm
Nokia Theatre
1515 Broadway
New York, New York 10036 Get Directions
The Annual Black August Hip Hop Benefit Concert strives to highlight the case of political prisoners through concerts, educational workshops, international exchanges and donations. Previous participants have included: Common, dead prez, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, David Banner, and the Roots. The shows have received media attention from networks like B.E.T. and magazines like Vibe. The international shows feature a number of international artists, as well as New Afrikan artists in places like Cuba and South Africa.

The benefit concerts coupled with the political education workshop have made Black August an unforgettable experience. It has increased the political commitment and dedication of Black August artists and activists to radical change. Through these avenues, we strive to: link the struggle to free our political prisoners with ongoing social and political issues in our communities such as education, reparations, political participation and HIV/AIDS, educate the community, artists and each other about political prisoners, their cases, their work on behalf of the community and provide support for them and donate proceeds from our New York concerts to political prisoners and around the country.
