Pamela Curr:
Refugee treatment since
'finding' Cornelia Rau
Pamela Curr, Community Campaign Co-ordinator at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne is the persistent human rights advocate who 'found' Cornelia Rau hidden inside the isolation block at the Baxter refugee jail in December 2004. In her talk at KULCHA, Pamela will be asking whether the Cornelia Rau bungles, the push that followed by Liberal backbenchers Petro Georgiou and Judi Moylan MP, the mighty upset and row in the Immigration Department and the ensuing Mea Culpa's by Ministers and public servants have actually led to significant changes in the way Australia treats refugees and asylum seekers. Pamela will also contextualise the recently introduced Ban the Boatpeople Bill which seeks to exclude and expel anyone who seeks refuge in Australia 'without making a prior appointment'.
