Riot Acts is a new project from live literature producing company, Penned in the Margins in association with East London arts centre, Rich Mix.

Rich Mix and Penned in the Margins called for submissions for new, original material, inspired by the London riots, to be presented as scratch performances on Saturday 19 November.

Four pieces were chosen from 30 proposals of work to be showcased as 15 minute scratch performances with their development supported by theatre director Russell Bender.

On the 19 November, audiences will see stand-up poet Luke Wright‘s Revolt, a tale of corruption at the top, combining contemporary social satire with the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.

Performance artist and theatre maker Greg McLaren of East London arts collective, Stoke Newington International Airport, will conduct A Score for a Riot, asking the audience to consider who is responsible for what they are doing, and who put them there in the first place.

Sophie Woolley‘s futuristic monologue Stratford City 2013 is a confessional about a bickering couple accidentally caught up in the riots of a beautiful giant shopping mall filled with lovely things.

And theatre collectives The Hurly Burly & Circus Kinetica join forces to create Birdy, a modern take on the Icarus myth set in a burning building.
