Wormfood presents Afriquoi the launch of a brand new project fusing African music with house, dancehall and dubstep.
Featuring legendary exiled musicians Kudaushe Matimba (Zimbabwe: Bhundu Boys, Harare) and Fiston Lusambo (Congo: Zong Zing All Stars), Afriquoi exist to bridge the gap between traditional African music and contemporary Western production. Fusing live marimba, African guitar, djembe, African vocals, dancehall MCing and crisp, heavy beats, blending dancehall, soca, chimurenga, soukous , house, dubstep and electro in a powerful, uplifting, dance-friendly blend.
Support from Nick Mulvey (former hang-player for the internationally acclaimed Portico Quarter), playing beautiful hand crafted songs drawing from blues, folk and African guitar traditions,
Zong Zing All Stars, Fiston’s own high energy 8-piece ensemble playing traditional upbeat Congolese soukous and cavacha,
and Pirate Soundsystem, whose recent single ‘Run Run’ with dancehall star Lady Chann has been tearing up the dancefloors. They will be finishing the night with their trademark mix of house, dancehall and carnival rave.
Free entry from 9pm-3am at the Best Live Music Venue in London 2011 (officially!), Hootananny Brixton.
