How does a camera work? What does each of its part? What is a lens, a shutter? How does one “see” light? This course first walks novices and beginners through a coherent set of answers to “picture” Photography in all its complex multiform reality. Mechanical, chemical, electronic, solar, and of course essentially human, all of Photography’s facets are always called upon to create any great photograph.
To do so, students will next master everything about basic camera controls to create “correct” manual exposures. A close examination of shutter-speeds and apertures’ creative coupling insures students gain a clear understanding of key notions such as depth-of-field, light-metering, film/sensor light sensitivity, ISO rating, push/pull processes, exposure bracketing, etc.
Students are also introduced to the materials and processes of black-and-white silver photography. Through lectures and lab-sessions students gain knowledge of the technical and artistic implications of the medium, as well as a broad understanding of traditional darkroom techniques. Special emphasis is given to film developing and negative printing, as both demand extended practical training to provide stable and predictable results.
A critical review of each student’s work concludes the workshop and lays out the fundamental vocabulary involved in evaluating photographic prints, addressing both their technical merits and interpretive qualities.
