Robin Ordell (Half Baked) joins Residents Rich Hill and Ed Lynn to kick off 2012 with some deep electronic goodness

After a storming 2011, bringing the likes of Shurikan, Chase Buch, Blamma Blamma, and Omid 16b to the Horse and Groom, Smackdown return to start 2012 in typical style, this time showcasing the up and coming talent of Robin Ordell

London based artist Robin Ordell’s love of soulful grooves, dub and funk music stem back into a childhood influenced by the masters of funk and soul, finding themselves intertwined into what is now a deep love affair with house music. Growing up in Nice, France, Robin found himself in London in 2007 drawn deeper into the underground house and techno scene. It was here that he began exercising his love for solid, bouncy house and he took to the decks and began playing.

2009 took a sharp turn for Ordell, playing at the infamous Fabric, T-Bar and Kubicle sparked a noticeable and deserved progression and confidence from this artist. It was around this time Half Baked was formed, now East London’s legendary underground Sunday party where Robin Ordell alongside Greg Brockmann and Hamid are residents. Half Baked has reached phenomenal success and Ordell has played alongside Seuil, Craig Richards, Lee Curtiss, Mayaan Nidam and Le Loup amongst others.

On the production front things are rapidly happening for this young artist with upcoming releases on Remake Musique, Safari Numerique and Leftroom. Deep bassy breaks and warm loops flow through his djing and productions, a unit of electronic rhythm with touches of minimal experimentation spread elegantly within his sound realm whilst remaining resolute in a signature of funk encased in a strong house message. Robin is currently working on solo projects and collaborations with some of electronic music’s most talked about upcoming producers and continues to play regularly around London and Europe.

Supporting Robin are residents Richie and Ed Lynn.

Richie, a veteran in house and techno had be brought up to listen to lots of different styles of music including jazz, blues, rock, 50s rock and roll, disco and funk, punk and so on, due to his dad being a drummer and his grandfather a trombone player. It was only logical that he would become more involved in the electronic side of music during the 80s with groups and artists such as New Order and Gary Newman, and following that through the 90s and to the present day, the underground side of house and techno music from a wide range of influences around the world. Expect to hear off the fly loop edits and samples combined with a range of deep, percussive, driving sounds with a bit of disco thrown in for good measure.

Ed Lynn is co-founder of Smackdown and Audio Intercourse, and has over the years developed an eclectic taste in electronic music, which is reflected in his style. Holding residencies with A.I., both in the club and as host on myhouseyourhouse.net, Ed has learnt and absorbed the art of communication between artist and listener. Currently his sound explores a deeper side; danceable,
experimental, rich and percussive, often with a nod to the twisted.

The Horse & Groom. January 7th 2012. Smackdown.
