Continuous Picnic
Saturday July 5, 2008 from 10:00am - 6:00pm
Montague Place
Nr. Russel Square
London, England Get Directions
10am - 12noon The Inverted Market
12 noon - 4pm The Picnic
4pm - 6pm Community Composting

Bohn & Viljoen Architects and their team of architects, community gardeners, designers and food enthusiasts explore this question in a day-long event celebrating local food and the city.

Their aim is to engage Londoners and visitors in a dialogue about urban food production and an alternative use of open space making the point that both could be combined advantageously in future urban design - as spelt out in Bohn & Viljoen's sustainable design concept for a Continuous Productive Urban Landscape (CPUL).

For one day, a designated area in one of the most beautiful parts of central London will transform into a continuous picnic of infinite personal encounters and fresh food events. Located on Montague Place (closed for traffic on that day) and Russell Square, this is a free outdoor event for everybody to celebrate good food and company.

The day will kick off in the morning with an Inverted Market, when any member of the public can bring any fruit and vegetable to Montague Place where it will be included in a 150-metre long Fresh Food market stall installation (and later be prepared and/or eaten).
At lunchtime, the Picnic Proper starts. Join in at any place and meet with your family, friends, neighbours, colleagues and others who like to be out in the open on a long summer's day.
The Short Continuous Picnic will conclude with a Community Composting event returning all compostable parts of the day to local communities for reuse.

Starting at 10am and running right through till evening, there will be lots of entertainment and things to see all centred around the idea of fresh fruit & vegetables: especially designed picnic blankets, children's food games, theme picnics, fruit raffles, picnic hampers, food exploration games, chef's fruit&veg preparation tables, a CPUL talk, an Edible Flower competition and many more...
