Geographer Derek Gregory and architect Eyal Weizman explore the emergent relationship between armed conflicts and the built environment. Examining the military’s own language, they will focus on the ways in which the military operates in Arab cities from the West Bank and Gaza to Afghanistan and Iraq.
The urban environment, they suggest, must be understood not simply as the backdrop to conflict, but as trapped in a complex feedback-based relation with the forces operating within it – be they a diverse local population, soldiers, guerrilla, media or humanitarian agents.
Speakers: Derek Gregory, Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia, and Eyal Weizman, architect and director of Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths College.
