John France is a professor of History and Classics and Director of the Callaghan Centre for Conflict Studies at Swansea University in Wales. Professor France works on the history of warfare and crusading and he is currently working on a study entitled Perilous Glory: Understanding the History of Western Warfare. Among other works, he is the author of The Crusades and the Expansion of Catholic Christendom, 1000-1714 (2005), Western Warfare in the Age of the Crusades (1999), Victory in the East: A Military History of the First Crusade (1994), "Fortifications East and West" (2006), "Two Types of Vision on the First Crusade: Stephen of Valence and Peter Bartholomew" (2006), "Logistics and the Second Crusade" (2006), and "The importance of the Bayeux Tapestry for the History of War" (2004).
