Michelle Soslau - Threads in the Current
Friday July 25, 2008 at 5:00pm
Cerulean Arts
1355 Ridge Avenue
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19123 Get Directions
Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Threads in the Current featuring painting, sculpture and prints by Michelle Soslau.

Soslau’s work in made out of an organic process – she is interested in how simple materials can be manipulated, combined and used. Gauze, Japanese paper and thread are just some of the materials she employs in her canvases and sculptures to weave a rich and vibrant story. Not intending to be clever, she hopes her work asks the questions “How is it made?” and “What does it mean?”, engaging the viewer in her dialogue. Soslau draws on the rich history of art, admiring Jackson Pollock’s freedom, Arthur Dove’s emphasis on nature and Arshile Gorky’s quirky biomorphism as well as the poetry of Wallace Stevens and others. For Soslau, art tells a story, makes a declaration, reveals the subconscious, and comments on the world, and our involvement with it as humans.

Michelle Soslau received an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2002 and BFA from Beaver College. Additionally, she has studied drawing with artist Timothy Hawkesworth and completed Seminars in Advanced Theoretical and Critical Studies at the Barnes Foundation. She has exhibited extensively in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, most recently at Ellarslie Museum in Trenton and at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Threads in the Current is on view from July 25, 2008 through August 29, 2008 and is free and open to the public. The opening reception is Friday, July 25 from 5-9pm. Ms. Soslau will be available to discuss and answer questions about her work Sunday, August 10 from 1-4pm with a gallery presentation at 2pm.
