Ping Pong Gallery is pleased to present the work of David O. Johnson, opening Thursday, July 13th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. This exhibition will run till August 19, 2006.

Johnson's sculptures explore the inherent tension that exists between materials: between neon and concrete, electricity and water, the light source and the darkroom, the viewer and the light. This tension brings dead materials to life, reinterprets urban space, and reestablishes a viewers relationship to light, the very element that enables us to see, feel warmth, and live.

This interest in neon initially arose out of Johnson's early studies of bioluminescent animals. From this curiosity evolved a more elaborate exploration of neon, and an investigation of its inherent qualities of attraction and the metaphors that stem from its prevalence in urban settings. While it draws us in close, it ultimately offers no heat, and has no ability to sustain life. In such, Johnson's particular use of neon light simulates a sense of warmth which also referencing a cold, industrial lifelessness.
