Congressional Chaos: Failure of Congressional Oversight
Wednesday July 30, 2008 at 11:00am
The Heritage Foundation
214 Massachusetts Avenue, NE
Washington, District of Columbia Get Directions
Host: The Heritage Foundation. In 2004, the 9/11 Commission recommended that Congressional oversight of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) be consolidated into a single, principal point of oversight. Four years later, at least 86 committees and subcommittees continue to exercise oversight over DHS – an impractical, constitutionally deficient, and simply poor managerial process. The time for reform of Congressional oversight is even more pressing as Election Day draws near because the ability of DHS to execute its first Presidential transition will be compromised if Congress continues its scattered approach. Join The Heritage Foundation as the participants discuss how the current oversight structure hinders the Department’s ability to fulfill its mission and examine the steps Congress should immediately take to radically overhaul this Congressional responsibility.
